A gas turbine is the core of a power plant and is also known as a combustion turbine. Gas turbines are used to produce electric current. A gas turbine is a machine which is used to convert other liquid fuels or natural gas to mechanical energy. This mechanical energy then drives a generator and thus it produces electrical energy. Each gas turbine has three main elements including an upstream rotating gas compressor; a combustor; and a downstream turbine on the same shaft as the compressor. For converting the energy into electricity, a mixture of fuel and air at very high temperature animated by the gas turbine causes the turbine blades to spin. The spinning turbine drives the generator, and thus electricity is generated. Over the earlier few years gas turbines have observed exponential development due to the technological advances that have occasioned in the design and development of highly efficient gas turbine units. Gas turbines are used in expanded services from jet engines and simple mechanical energies on land, sea and air to sophisticated gas lasers and supersonic wind tunnels. In the aerospace applications these units are referred to as jets, turbojets, turbofans, and turboprops. In land and sea based applications these units are mentioned to as mechanical drive gas turbines. Gas turbines are increasingly being used in power plants both in the utility and power sectors for their tremendous energy producing capacity, compactness, inherent flexibility, high performance, operational availability and multiple fuel capability. Aerospace sector appears to be the most promising sector in future due growing investments in manufacturing and migration across various regions. Rapid technological developments including in the field of combustion materials, cooling and aerodynamics along with allied focus pertaining to decentralized generation technologies will stimulate the market development. Growing investments pertaining to the replacement of existing electricity generating technologies with improved gas-fired power generating stations to limit emissions will positively impact the industry landscape.
